Arnova 90 G3, low cost 9″ Android tablet [Updated]

FCC web site brought us a new Arnova 90 G3 tablet on April 1st, there must be something fishy going on :) Not much details are available for product codename SOVAN90G3 on the FCC site, it currently just offers some test reports and the tablet case layout which clearly shows a 16/9 screen ratio. While the tablet hasn’t been announced by Arnova, a quick search on the web shows that the Arnova 90 G3 is actually available for sale on a few sites in Spain and France, that’s a great occasion to get more details about the specs.

Update 2013/04/03: Arnova has just updated their website with the 90 G3 pages.

ARNOVA_90G3_FCC_b_nowrmk

French retail store Auchan.fr actually has the product in stock for €99.
ARNOVA_90G3_Auchan_fr_b

The detailed specs from the seller product page are showing a very low end Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet with the following specifications: Cortex A9 at 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 9″ multipoint display, WiFI, 4 GB storage, microSD slot, front camera. The announced screen resolution of 800×480 pixels, with tablet dimensions (23.9 cm x 1.16 cm x 14.8 cm) and a weight of 480g seems to be quite unusual for a 9″ tablet, if the pictures and numbers can be trusted, that would feature a wide 16/9 screen ratio and a very low density (understand _big_ pixels) which is even under the Android ldpi value (120 dpi)

We’ll be definitely looking for more details on that product, Arnova 90 G3 owners feel free to contact us, we are very interested in some pictures of the tablet and feedback on this product.

The FCC is now listing another product refresh with an 8 inches ChildPad tablet. Initially sold under Arnova brand, the ChildPad was an entry level children oriented 7″ Android tablet (reviewed here) Initially available with resistive screen only, the product saw a first update with capacitive touchscreen, then a rebrand, appearing under Tabeo name (sold by Toys’R'Us), offering an HDMI connector, more apps/games and some Tabeo designed accessories (dock, case and cables)
Not much is known about the new ChildPad, FCC site just shows us it should be in white and orange color and have an HDMI output, we can expect a low end device such as the ARCHOS Cobalt with a 4/3 aspect ratio screen.

Arnova 10 G2 Android 4.03 ICS custom firmware update with root and Google Play Store released

$

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on the Arnova 10 G2, it’s there, finally !
We have a improved an existing ICS firmware to add root, Google Play Store support, CWR Recovery, init.d like scripts, 2 GB storage space for apps and few bugs fixes to the Arnova 10 G2
.

Due to popular demand, even if work on this firmware is not completely finished we are now publishing a first release. Keep in mind that the Arnova 10 G2 has limited resources, 512 MB of RAM is a bit too low to offer perfectly smooth ICS operation, we recommend killing tasks frequently or using a task killer to help with slowdown situations.

Arnova 10 G2 ICS custom firmware features

  • clean installation of Google Play Store with additionnal fixes so more application are visible/compatible
  • root access with SuperSU 1.25 (free version) by XDA developer Chainfire
  • extended space for applications (/data) to 2 GB
  • updated busybox v1.21.0.git (2012-11-29)
  • Unix like init.d boot scripts support, more details on init.d scripts here
  • optional Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) support, courtesy of fenice57, thank you !
  • Built-in ArcTools application for optional packages installation and Recovery reboot
  • Support the project!

If our web site and applications helped you, thanks for supporting us by donating using the Paypal form below or visiting our Donations page. Donations will be used to pay the bills for our server hosting costs, tools and purchase new tablets to support.

    Install procedure

Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.

We are publishing two versions of the custom firmware. The default one comes with stock recovery, there is another build with CWM Recovery (thanks fenice57)
If you don’t know what CWM is or don’t need it, just use the stock version, which should fit most users.

    Step 1. Download

This firmware is specific to the Arnova 10 G2 and should not be installed on other devices.

WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.

THIS FIRMWARE UPDATE IS USED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This firmware should be installed using ROCKCHIP FLASHING TOOLS.

Download the file above and extract the custom firmware image (update.img) on your computer hard drive.

Step 2. Install and run Rockchip Flashing tool

Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, unpack the archive, put your device into flashing mode and flash the custom firmware file that you have unpacked in Step 1. Use Restore button in Rockchip flasher to make sure your device gets properly erased.

Step 3. Arnova 10 G2 flashing and restart

After Rockchip flasher has transferred the custom firmware to the tablet, you will have to restart the tablet to finish installing the firmware. Finally you will be back to Arnova default startup wizard.

Notes for Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) users

Don’t worry about the messages saying "E:Can't mount /cache/recovery..." on the CWM screen at first boot.
Choose ">Wipe data/factory reset" by pushing the hardware Vol- / Vol+ button on your tablet to move the cursor down/up, use Power button to select.
On the second screen, use again the tablet hardware buttons to select "> Yes -- delete all user data".
Let the tablet format the /data and /cache partitions.
Once "Data wipe complete." message appears, scroll to "> Reboot system now" option.
From a running Android system, you can use ArcTools to reboot into Recovery, start ArcTools application, select “Reboot” button in the upper toolbar, choose “Reboot Recovery”, then click on “Select Reboot” button. If SuperSU access request window shows, click on “Grant” button to allow ArcTools to reboot your system.

This may look like a tempting offer, we will review the Arnova 90 G3 tablet features and check it is really worth the money and will also compare it with two other tablet models selling for about 100 euros.

A close look at the devices components and specifications reveals that the manufacturer has been cutting costs on every possible aspect of this 9 inches tablet: low end screen, single core processor, slow flash memory storage. The remaining specs and offered connectivity are quite limited as well: no HDMI, no Bluetooth, no GPS, single camera. Let’s see how this setup compares with tablets of similar value.

    Quadrant Standard v2.1.1 benchmark video:

    Arnova 90 G3 screen

The Arnova 90 G3 tablet features a rather unusual display format with a 9 inches screen at a 800×480 resolution. This gives a screen ratio of ~1,667 which is somewhere between 16/10 (1.6) and 16/9 (~1,778) formats. With these kinds of specs, you won’t need to get very close to the screen to see the pixels.

If you are used to mid range Android tablets, you will quickly find a rather poor visual experience on the Arnova 90 G3, even for a low cost model build in 2013: main issues we noticed are poor contrast and display colors (they look washed and show a blue tint) rather limited viewing angles and very low resolution (800×480)

The short video below compares the Arnova 90 G3 (9″, 800×480) with another tablet in the similar 100 euros price range: the Hyundai T7 (7″, 1280×800) tablets displays, showing the difference in screen colors, contrast and pixel density.

    Low screen density

One more thing is to consider the screen is a 9 inches diagonal, you get a very low pixel density, actually set at lowest value in Android system ldpi value (120 dpi) which is normally used on small size screens.

Multimedia on the Arnova 90 G3

ARCHOS is well known for the rock solid multimedia playing feature on their devices, they recently introduced their own Video and Music applications in Google Play Store. Curiously, with the Arnova 90 G3 tablet, they even saved on the media player application as the tablet ships with ARCHOS Video Player free version, that has is feature limited and supported thru advertisement. The experience goes even worse as we tested a few video files, including “Sintel” animation video file that ships with the device, curiously none of them managed to play with ARCHOS Video Player, resulting in a black screen.

Is the Arnova 90 G3 worth the money ?

The few days spent with the Arnova 90 G3 did not lead to a very enjoyable experience, there is a lot of frustration coming from the slow processor and general performance, the rather cheap display with poor colors, low resolution. Unless you really need a big screen and you can cope with the limited features of the Arnova 90 G3, we’d recommend to turn to models with lower screen sizes such as 8″ or 7″, which can give you better resolution, more accurate colors and a more portable tablet format. It seems good quality 9 inches type screens in the €100 range budget are currently very difficult to achieve without making serious compromises about the quality and features, which is pretty much what the Arnova 90 G3 is about.

Great alternatives are to go with middle range tablets in smaller screen size such as the Hyundai T7, currently one of the best value in the 7″ tablet: great screen, great connectivity and performance, imported models sell for about €110 / $140 / £95 . Another option in 7″ is the cheaper Pipo S1, selling for €62 / $85 / £52 . On the very low end specs, still with a 7 inches display, there is also a model similar to the Arnova 90 G3 such as the Cube U25GT are sold for about €55 / $71 / £46 imported as well.
