Firmware revision history

Version 1.2 (2012/07/23):
Added Bluetooth support for GPS on selected hardware, see our Bluetooth GPS article, thanks fenice57 for the BT kernel modules.
Added Google Calendar application version 2.3.1
Updated Google Play Store to version 3.7.13, GMail to 2.3.6
Update SuperUser application to version 3.1.3
Updated Rockchip loader to version 2.20

Limitations

This firmware is based on a dump from latest Arnova firmware, where we have pre-installed root access (if you need it) and Android Market. Being a very standard firmware, it has a limitation of offering about 200 Mb free for your Android applications to install. Most applications are using just a few megabytes, so that should let you install dozens of them.

Arnova GBook passes FCC, we got a product image for you too

$

Completely unexpected(does that not sound familiar?), good guys from FCC informed the whole web that a new product from Archos is coming up – Arnova GBook. And well, for us at Arctablet, it’s is becoming a tradition to cover all the new products from Archos. We couldn’t let the GBook just pass by and we decided to sneak around a bit. Like you can see, we have something to show to you. ;) Any interesting details? Well, the title of the book is coloured black. On the product images for Archos 70d eReader, Archos 70 eReader and all the Android eReaders from Archos/Arnova, the title was always coloured blue. It is very possible that the GBook will feature an E-Ink screen which will make it the first eReader from Archos to feature such a screen.

We were talking about FCC, right? Due to the agreement with Archos, they were only allowed to put an image of its back online:

Given the dimensions, we expect the GBook will feature a 7″ touchscreen. The only question – will this thing run Android? We agree, it’s quite insane to have Android running in black&white, but Android has some nice possibilities for reading and well, it could be the same thing like locked-up, but still Android-based, Sony PRS-T1. Given the fact that it has Wi-Fi 802.11n(Thanks to FCC for this information), it would make it easy to download reading stuff from Appslib. We are not very sure about the release date, but FCC is informing us that the external and all the other photos will be available on September the 10th and we expect the product launch should also be around that time.

Thanks goes to the FCC and a little bird who brought the product image. ;)

Arnova kernel sources released for nearly all G3 models + 10G2

$

0

While we had to wait for them for some time, Archos has finally put the kernel sources for most Arnova models. Unfortunately, the ones for the 7c G3, the 8b G3 and for nearly all older models(an exception is 10G2) are not available at this moment.

Here are the download links(redirect to Arnova website):

For more information about the GPL V2, visit the following address:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html

For more information about the LGPL V2, visit the following address:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/lgpl-2.0.html

In case you want to “punish” Archos for putting them online a little bit late, you can request a CD-R with the sources from them. Just ask them to send it somewhere to the North Pole or Antartica, so they will have to spend a fortune on getting the CD-R and shipping it there. :) How much this joke costs? Well, 15EUR + a written request sent directly to Arnova HQ in Igny, France. You won’t take this seriously, right? ;)

Thanks to HaroldG for pushing to get the kernel sources available, thanks to Archos/Arnova for finally listening to the developers communities and complying to the LGPL.

(update) Bluetooth and GPS support on the Arnova G2 tablets

$

Bluetooth support is a missing feature on most Arnova G2 tablets, apart from the Arnova 7c G2 which has a different hardware.

Missing support in the device kernel and system can be added thru kernel modules, to make some external USB Bluetooth dongles work. Fenice57 already did that a while ago on his custom firmware for the Arnova 7 G2.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Bluetooth and GPS support on the Arnova G2 tablets with a custom firmware

We have started to adapt our custom firmwares for the Arnova G2 tablets to include Bluetooth support on the devices that offer an USB Host feature. These firmwares should be published shortly, starting with the Arnova 10 G2.

Here is a video of an Arnova 10 G2 connected to a Royaltek Bluetooth GPS using a Daffodil Bluetooth USB dongle (ref. 06M)

Hardware requirements

The setup to support Bluetooth on the Arnova tablets requires an USB Bluetooth dongle to be connected to the USB plug on the tablet, directly if the device has full size USB connector or using an USB Host cable.

USB Bluetooth dongle
The USB dongle must be based on a chipset made by CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio, the company has actually been bought by Samsung two days ago), other chipsets are not supported at the moment.

We successfully tested the Daffodil 06M dongle below to be compatible.

USB Host cable, sometimes named USB OTG cable is used to connect the Bluetooth USB dongle (full size USB) to the tablet micro USB port. The Arnova 9 G2 and Arnova 10 G2 already have a full size USB Host connector and do not require the USB OTG cable.

Software setup

As you can see on our video, once you have loaded our custom firmware (to be published soon) you will need these two applications to use a Bluetooth GPS on your tablet. Both applications are available for free on Google Play.

Bluetooth GPS
You can then use any application that supports a GPS, including Google Maps.

Android 4.0.4 ICS on the Arnova 10 G2 testing kernel and firmware (alpha)

$
0
0

The Arnova 10 G2 has been left without Android system update and hasn’t evolved from Android 2.3 Gingerbread. By chance, Arnova recently released the kernel source code for some of their tablets (thanks HaroldG). Based on this source code, we have built a Linux Kernel that let the Arnova 10 G2 run Android 4.04 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

Our current test firmware is a proof of concept, we have a kernel that properly boots the device, but only few components are working so far:
- screen: working
- sound: working
- USB host: working (tested with mouse)
- touchscreen: partially working
- acceleremoter: half working (axis problems)
- camera: half working (inverted on y axis)
- wifi: not working

As you can guess, it’s still a long way to get everything working and there is no certitude we will ever succeed in making a stable Android 4 ICS on the Arnova 10 G2.
No need to ask for a release date for the files, a test firmware will be published when it’s ready.

After the ChildPad Android tablet for kids, Arnova now brings us the Familypad, an Android tablet with a large screen. The FCC pictures reveal some interesting features: 13.3 ” screen, dual camera, Boxchip Allwinner A10 CPU 1 GHz. The tablet casing, with rear speakers and the use of a dual camera remind us of the Archos Carbon, Archos Elements product line latest model.

The tablet internals reveal the use of a Boxchip Allwinner A10 CPU, that Arnova already used on the Arnova 7 G3 and offers a good performance/battery life/price ratio.

The FCC also features a user manual which reference a MW13-1301 tablet which seems to be the original product, it confirms the tablet runs Android and gives some more details about the tablet features:

1. CPU: All Winner A10, Cortex-A8 1GHz
2. Screen: 13.3″ TFT, 1280×800 pixels

Arnova 7h G3 passes FCC, cheap 7″ Android 4 ICS tablet with Boxchip Allwinner A13 CPU, 512 Mb

$

With the release of the Arnova 7h G3 at the FCC, it looks like we now have the sub 100 euros we have been discussing earlier. Specs wise, it appears to be a slimmed down version of the Arnova 7 G3: the Boxchip Allwinner A13 CPU, 512 Mb RAM, no HDMI.. Considering the specifications and competitors offers (Charbax reported some 7″ A13 based tablets selling in quantity at $55), we could expect the 7h G3 to retail at a cheap price, probably between 70 to 90 euros.

(FCC pictures)

Arnova 7h G3 specs

The Arnova 7hG3 certification page at the FCC also features a user manual which reference a ME12-7001 tablet which seems to be the original product that Arnova has customized: we can see a Dual color front black, white back and a weird shaped back speaker on the Arnova.

More details on the YF Technology ME12-7001 on the manufacturer’s page:

Features:
1. CPU: All Winner A13, Cortex-A8 1GHz
2. Screen: 7″ TFT, 800×480 pixels
3. CTP: G
4. 512MB DDR3;4GB FLASH,Optional 8 GB FLASH
5. WIFI: IEEE 802.11b/g/n
6. GPS: Optional
7. 0.3M front camera; optional: 2M front camera
8. 3D G-Sensor
9. USB OTG: Optional
10. Battery: 2500mAh

Specs wise, it looks very similar to the Prestigio MultiPad 7.0 Prime (PMP3270B), we reported earlier.

Arnova 7h G3 and FamilyPad OEM prices revealed, want a tablet for 53$?

$
0
0

A few days ago, there was IFA. Where was IFA, there was YF Tech, the OEM manufacturer for some of the Arnova products. And where are small Chinese companies, there is also Charbax. The enthousiastic guy with a nyan cat on his shirt decided to have a look on what YF Tech had to offer and asked them about their pricing options.

Let’s start with the Arnova FamilyPad. Though the model shown at IFA was the MW13-1304 and the Arnova FamilyPad unit that passed the FCC was the MW13-1301, we think that both models should be quite similar… The FamilyPad offers a 1280×800 13.3″ TN screen, 1GB of RAM, 10500 mAh battery which should last for 4-5 hours and runs on an Allwinner A10 processor. And if you buy 1000 of them directly from YF Tech, it will only cost you 180$/piece. Archos will probably put it in the market for 199-299€, but we will still have to see the final pricing. It should be available in the coming months.

Then there is also Arnova 7h G3, which should probably become the first white Arnova tablet. The shown model was looking the same as Prestigio MultiPad 7.0 Prime which is currently selling for a RRP of 89€. The 7h G3 will be feature a slightly different case design and possibly, 1GB of RAM, but still, the two models are pretty simillar. The guy told Charbax that the tablet will cost you only 53$ for one if you buy 1000 of them. Given that fact, we can expect the Arnova 7h G3 to sell between 70 and 90€.

More details on Arnova GBook

$

Last sunday we promised to come up with more details on the GBook this week. Well, here they are. Thanks to the Appslib post on facebook that leaked out the 97 Xenon, it is confirmed that the GBook will also run on Android.
Now you will wonder why we post a silly blurred screenshot. The thing is that that information from the Appslib FB page is now removed, so we were not able to take another one. Just look at the other names. Do you see Arnova 10G4? Actually, the 10b G4 is also planned, but we don’t have a screenshot to prove that. You can google yourself for it, it is still in cache. ;)

Now getting to the whole point, the FCC images have been revealed.

Here is the image with its internals:

The 3000 mAh batery is the same as the one in the ChildPad.  We tried to find out who is the manufacturer for the motherboard and it turned out to be quite simillar to the one used in the ChildPad and Vimicro is the main supplier, so there is probably a Rockchip RK2918 processor inside.

Finally, there is also the user manual which suggests that the GBook will run on Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sanwich”, will not be Google certified and will feature a capacitive touchscreen.

Here are the tech specs for those that are interested. ;)

The Arnova 7 G2 tablet gets Android 4.0 ICS with the 7 G2i model

It looks like Arnova has decided to recycle their old Arnova 7 G2 and update these tablets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) like they did for the Arnova 9 G2i.
At first look, this model is just an Arnova 7 G2 tablet with the same specs: Rockchip RK2918 CPU at 1 GHz, 512 Mb RAM, 7″ screen. This “new” Arnova 7 G2i seems to be currently available in a few European countries (Belgium, Netherlands, UK).

The product box is identical to the old Arnova 7 G2, with just an additional Android 4.0 ICS sticker.
The system is running on Android version 4.0.3 (build eng 4.0.3 IML74K eng.root.20120615.040238 test-keys) with a Linux Kernel version 3.0.8+ (built Fri Jun 15 09:25:37 CST 2012)

We do confirm that this Arnova 7 G2i ICS firmware can be flashed on a regular Arnova 7 G2 model. We are currently working on making a custom firmware to update the Arnova 7 G2i and the older 7 G2 model to Android 4.0 ICS with Google Play Store and root access, stay tuned !

Thanks to exelletor and our forum member Oream for the 7 G2i device pictures and the firmware update.

Arnova 7 G2 custom firmware upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS with Google Play and full root

$
0
0

We recently reported the existence of the Arnova 7 G2i, which is basically an Arnova 7 G2 sold with Android 4.0 ICS. Thanks to Oream member on our forum for making a firmware dump of his device that is confirmed to work on the older Arnova 7 G2. We have modified that firmware dump to add Google Play Store/Android Market, full root, write access to /system partition and extended 1.5 Gb space for applications (/data partition)

Arnova 7 G2 custom firmware features

  • Clean installation of Google Play Store, no more missing apps (Twitter, Facebook…)
  • Full root support with writable /system partition
  • Root access is controled thru SuperSU.apk v0.96 (free version), a cool upgrade to SuperUser.apk by XDA developer Chainfire
  • Extended space for applications (/data) to 1.5 Gb
  • Install procedure

Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.

    Step 1. Download

Kasty custom firmware download (version 0.43)

    kasty-ez_arn7g2-40-043-1_5G.zip

This firmware is specific to the Arnova 7 G2 (capacitive model only) and Arnova 7 G2i and should not be installed on other devices.

WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.

THIS FIRMWARE UPDATE IS USED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

WE RECOMMEND TO FLASH THIS FIRMWARE ONLY IF YOU ARE ABLE TO RESCUE A BRICKED DEVICE USING ROCKCHIP FLASHING TOOLS.

Download the file above and extract the custom firmware image (update.img) on your computer hard drive.

Step 2. Install and run Rockchip Flashing tool

Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, unpack the archive, put your device into flashing mode and flash the custom firmware file that you have unpacked in Step 1. We recommend that you use Restore button rather than Upgrade button in Rockchip flasher to make sure your device gets properly erased.

Step 3. Arnova 7 G2 flashing and restart

After Rockchip flasher has transferred the custom firmware to the tablet, you will have to restart the tablet to finish installing the firmware. Finally you will be back to Arnova default startup wizard.

The following video demonstrates the 3 easy steps of the installation procedure to get Google Play Store and root to your Arnova 7 G2 in just a few minutes. The video shows the procedure for the Arnova 9 G2, but it’s very similar for the 7 G2.

Let us know how this firmware works for you in our Arnova 7 G2 forum.

Thanks to exelletor and Oream member of our forum for the Arnova 7 G2i firmware dump.

    Arnova 10c G3 and 10d G3 show their faces, 10d G3 passes FCC

While Archos tends to spend too much time on releasing more tablets in the Arnova G3 line-up, we tend to spend too much time on checking the new images on Mr Blurrypress and the FCC pages. Actually, we already mentioned the 10c G3 a few weeks ago, but we didn’t know much back then. Anything interesting?

For the specs for the 10c G3, which looks pretty much like the Arnova 7h G3, we visited the YF Tech website and found one 10.1″ model.

    10.1″ Tablet PAD MW13-1001

    Features
    1. CPU: All Winner A10, Cortex-A8 1GHz
    2. Screen: 10.1″ TFT, 1024×600 pixels
    3. CTP:G
    4. 1GB DDR3, 8 GB FLASH; optional: 16 GB FLASH
    5. WIFI: IEEE 802.11b/g/n
    6. 0.3M front camera, optional: 2M front camera
    7. 3D G-Sensor, USB OTG&USB HOST, HDMI 1.4
    8. Battery: 5000mAh

Not much to write home about for the 10c, but what about the 10d G3?

Looking at the FCC documents, it looks like the 10d G3 will feature Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, microSD slot, full size USB-host, mini-HDMI and mini-usb ports, along with the volume buttons. Thanks to idealo.de cashing system, we also get to know the other specifications:

1Ghz Cortex A8 processor, 1GB of RAM, 1024×600 display and Android 4.0. Pretty much the same specifications as the 10c G3 and not much different from the 10b G3. Still, some websites had the 10d G3 listed for 110-130EUR, which is slightly lower than the current 10b G3 retail price.

Arnova ChildPad&7d G3 Android 4.0.4 + CWM Recovery custom firmware

    $

    0

The Arnova ChildPad is an children-optimised Android 4.0 ICS Android tablet with great features for an affordable price. It comes with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, featuring a Rockchip RK2918 CPU, 1 Gb of RAM and is available with capacitive or resistive screens. In addition to our first custom firmware which brings root and Google Play on the device, we are happy to provide another one to provide full Android 4.0.4 experience, CWM Touch recovery and many other options. Though we developed this firmware with the ChildPad in mind, it should also work on Arnova 7d G3.

Changes over our previous kasty custom firmware:

    • Android 4.0.4 built from Evolution 2.3 for Cube U9GT2
    • CWM Touch Recovery built from Prestigio 5080B
    • Update fw files to 20120608 Official FW version (capacitive only)
    • Allow mass storage
    • Stability improvements
    • Camera enhacements
    • Smoother screen rotation
    • Change browser behaviour(keeps processes going on, for ex. playing music)
    • Google Ears included
    • Face Unlock
    • Apex Launcher
    • Fix disappearing icons after performing a reboot
    • Fix Google+ and Google Talk issues
    • Fix Google Calendar Sync issue

This firmware also features full Google Play support and read/write access to /system partition.

Arnova ChildPad custom firmware install procedure

Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.

    Step 1. Download

AN7DG3-CP20120919EV2.3 | ONLY FOR CAPACITIVE SCREEN MODEL |

This firmware is specific to the Arnova ChildPad and 7d G3 capacitive screen models and should not be installed on other devices.

TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE | ONLY FOR RESISTIVE SCREEN MODEL |

This firmware is specific to the Arnova ChildPad and 7d G3 resistive screen models and should not be installed on other devices.

Download one of the files from above and extract the custom firmware files on your computer hard drive.

    Step 2. Installing the driver

Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, put your device into flashing mode and install the driver. Because we are using a different setup here(otherwise we would have to build six different firmwares), you only need to follow steps 1-3 from that tutorial.

    Step 3. Installation

Run EvolutionRKTool program from the first archive. Check that your tablet is connected by usb and is put in the recovery mode. RKAndroidTool should say “Found RKAndroid Loader Rock Usb”. There are three parameter files in the Loader folder. Select one of the three, corresponding to the size of the Apps partition you want to have(parameter for 512MB, parameter-1G for 1GB and parameter-15G for 1.5GB). Now tick the other boxes as shown on the picture below.

Now, click on EraseIDB. After the proces is finished(should take around 15 seconds), click on Run. When the CWM Recovery will show up on the device, choose Reboot System now. After a couple of minutes, the Start-up Wizard should appear. Please note that the wizard itself may be a little bit slower than the stock one from Arnova.

    Tips&Tricks

    Improving screen density.

The procedure is explained on our forum. After applying, don’t clear cache and/or data of Google Play, as not all the apps will be visible then.

    Kaspersky Mobile Parental Control.

With this custom firmware, we decided not to install the Mobile Parental Filter app from Profil Technology. If you still want one, we recommend to use the one from Kaspersky, as it is free and has more options than the stock one on the ChildPad.

Setting up parental filtering on Google Play

This custom firmware will open your ChildPad thousands of applications in Google Play, but you may want to enable filtering, so your little ones do not see applications they are not supposed to see.

To achieve this, start Google Play Store, go to the upper right corner menu, click on it, select Settings

Scroll to “User Controls” section, click on Content filtering item

Make sure that only “Everyone” rating is checked.
According to Google, “Everyone” setting should not contain objectionable material, where “Low maturity” setting may include mild cartoon or fantasy violence or other potentially offensive content.

Let us know how it works for you in our Arnova ChildPad forum.

If you have been following the Arnova tablets story, we mentioned the existence of these devices not so long ago. They are now official on Arnova web site. These are rather basic models: the Arnova 7h G3 is the entry level 7 inches tablet, with 512 Mb RAM, ARM Cortex A8, 1 GHz CPU (probably Boxchip Allwinner A13) coming in a white case. The Arnova 10c G3 has similar specs to the 10b G3: 10.1″ screen, ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 1 Gb RAM. Finally the Arnova 10d G3 comes with an 1 Gb RAM, an ARM Cortex A9 @ 1.2 GHz CPU (probably a Rockchip RK3066 running at low clock VIA8850 CPU) and a nice case. Watch soon for a review of these marvels, well maybe :)

While the Arnova website doesn’t mention much specifications for the Arnova 10d G3, we found it to be an ordinary OEM model, just like the Arnova 10c G3 and Arnova 7h G3. This time the Zenithink Z1000 model was taken and the modifications made are the addition of 512MB RAM and the reduced flash memory to 4GB.. The thing about the VIA8850 processor is – while it is based on Cortex A9 architecture, it is actually still a silly single-core processor and provides simillar performance to Allwinner A10. Here is the picture of the Z1000 model:

For those wanting to see the performance of the 10d G3, here is the video from Charbax about a tablet which uses the same chipset:

And here are the expected specs for the Arnova 10d G3:

Thanks to McBub for the info on the model. The Z1000 is being offered there for 139$ incl. shipping, so let’s hope Archos will offer it for a reasonable price too. More Arnova G3 stuff is still on the way, we are talking about the GBook which will feature a RK29xx processor and the FamilyPad based on the Allwinner A10. ;)

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Arnova G3 (NEOCM10 LEON port)

Our forum member Neomode has recently published NEOCM10 “LEON”, an Android 4.1 port for the Arnova G3. We have tested this firmware and found it to work quite well on the Arnova 10b G3: Google Apps, Play Store and Google Now are all working fine. There is still a bit of lag in the user interface and issues with the accelerometer, but it’s already very stable.

Quick video demo of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running on the Arnova 10b G3

This firmware also comes with ClockWorkMod Touch recovery (CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4 Beta 15)

Access Windows / Samba / NAS network drives on your Arnova G3 with our CIFS package

    INTRODUCTION

Target of this tutorial is to explain how to mount NAS, Samba (SMB) or Windows network shared drives on the Arnova G3 Android ICS tablets. It uses the CIFS kernel modules, which are unfortunately not provided “by default” on many existing tablet firmwares.

Several softwares or file manager extensions offered on “Google Play Store” do provide their own SMB implementations (examples: AndSMB, Astro, File Manager HD, …), but they may not be compatible with all devices, and especially with all types of shared drives. At least with my Arnova 10b G3 and my old Samba/Linux drive, they don’t work properly. Thus I wanted to get a more generic and “kernel based” solution, in order to allow all my tablet applications to gain a transparent access to my network shared drives! :)

Last but not least, as many of you like to get their own local specific characters and accents, a correct UTF8 implementation is requested to display and access all files and directories.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • An Arnova G3 tablet with Android ICS, root access (superuser) and a writable /system partition (most custom firmwares provide all this)
    • Latest version of Arctools installed, offering CIFS kernel modules installation.
    • CIFS Manager” software, available on “Google Play Store”.
    • A NAS, Samba (SMB) or Windows network shared drive, with UTF8 support properly activated.

    INSTALLATION

    1) Arctools CIFS Modules

If not already done, download and install the latest version of Arctools on “Appslib”.

Go to Arctools “Apps Install” page, download and install Arnova G3 CIFS Modules.

In order to verify the modules installation, go to the Arctools Tools page, and press on the CIFS icon under “Drivers and Services”, at the bottom of the screen:

If everything works fine, you should get the icon stripe turning green:

Now you can leave Arctools and go to the next step. Please note that, from now, we will handle to CIFS kernel modules through the CIFS Manager software, so you should not have to use Arctools anymore for that purpose.

    2) CIFS Manager

Download and install CIFS Manager software, available on “Google Play Store”.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.plattner.cifsmanager

Launch CIFS Manager. DO NOT press “Add New Share” yet. Go to the option page by pressing on the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen (see red circle):

    […]

You will get the CIFS Manager general configuration page.

First remove the “Mount point prefix” default value (leave it empty) : We will use absolute paths in the network shared drive configuration. Then activate “Load cifs module” and “Load via insmod” as described. Finally update “Path to cifs.ko” with the following sentence:

    “/system/lib/modules/cifs.ko; insmod /system/lib/modules/md4.ko; insmod /system/lib/modules/nls_utf8.ko”

Warning: The first module path & file does NOT have an “insmod” in front of it. It will be added by the CIFS Manager software.

Now go back to the main screen and press “Add New Share”. Then fill-in all parameters with the requested info:

    - Share Path: Put your remote NAS/Computer IP address and the shared directory, separated by a “/”. Check carefully on your server how the path is set (relative/absolute).

    - Mount Point: Place to mount the shared directory on your tablet. “/mnt/cifs/[dir_name]” is the standard place, but you may better use “/mnt/sdcard/[dir_name]” if you whish to access easily the shared drive from your main User directory.

    - Username & Password: Put the needed info… I haven’t got the opportunity to test a remote shared drives with “anonymous” access. Just try “anonymous” in the Username field…

    - Options: “iocharset=utf8” and “nounix” have to be set, separated by a “;”. The latest one prevents any potential file access issue due to specific CIFS extensions available on a UNIX share. If you still get no file access, you may use “noperm” instead of “nounix”. More info can be found on: http://linux.die.net/man/8/mount.cifs.

Press “Save Share” and go back to the main CIFS Manager menu.

Then press once on the newly created shared drive. If everything goes fine :) , you should get a nice green dot to the right:

If not :( , then you will get a red one (or just the grey one):

In case of shared drive mounting failure, an error will be displayed on the screen. If it says something like “no such file or device”, most probably the CIFS kernel modules are not working correctly, or there is an error in the “Options” parameters line.

You may also perform on long press on the shared drive which will bring you the following menu (depending on the mounting status, some options may be different or greyed out):

When you finally get the green dot, just leave CIFS Manager and launch to your favourite file manager. Mine is “File Manager” (with or w/o HD) from Rhythm Software. Check that your mounted shared drive is working properly, especially if the local specific characters / accents are correctly displayed. Try to open directories & files to also check permissioning aspects.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

As the CIFS kernel modules are not part of your firmware image, each time you turn off/on your tablet, you need to reinsert the modules and mount the network shared drive. No need to go through Arctools. Just launch CIFS Manager, press once on your shared drive line, and leave CIFS Manager.

A solution for automatic CIFS kernel modules insertion at boot, and automatic network shared drive mounting has to be worked out. To be continued… :)

Another day, another Arnova G3 tablet release, it’s an eReader this time. Looking at the Arnova GBook specifications, it’s nothing really fancy, just a relatively old CPU ARM Cortex A8 at 1 Ghz (probably Rockchip RK29xx), 1 Gb of RAM and WIFI. The screen is mentioned to be a 7″ high resolution capacitive color touchscreen TFT offering a 800 x 480 pixels display (16:9 ratio), there are no words about electronic ink display technlogy used here, so we are not sure if it’s that comfortable for long reading sessions.

Compared to a regular Arnova tablet, the device comes with Aldiko eBook Reader Premium application, that would cost €2.99 euros on Google Play Store otherwise. Speaking about Marketplace, this device does not have Google Play Store, but instead provides Archos own Appslib.
